Valentine’s Day Traditions

Valentine’s Day is an easy holiday – as far as holidays go. No large groups of visitors, no huge gift lists, no complex meals required. Nestled in the midst of winter “stuck in the house” season, it is also an opportunity for special family fun – memories children will remember and cherish (and pass along) as they get older. We hope you will share some of your favorite Valentine’s Day traditions – we’ll publish your bright ideas. Here are a few of our favorites:

Decorate Valentine’s Day Cookies: You may not have found time in December – but children of all ages will love to spend a February afternoon decorating heart-shaped cookies. Teach children the joy of giving by surprising your neighbors with a plate

Valentine’s Day Treasure Hunt: Hide “love notes” to your children (and spouse!) all around the house, let them find them, along with little surprises, and read the notes together

I Love You Scrap Book: Each Valentines Day, pick a few special pictures, and decorate a scrapbook page together. Write about why the picture shows love. Each year, your book will grow, and children will enjoy the memories

Read a Special Book: Sip hot chocolate and enjoy a special story year after year, such as: I Love You Because or If Kisses Were Colors

Write Special Valentines: With your children, write a special note to family members – asking children to remember something special the grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc. did for them and how it made them feel. Help your child remember and express their gratitude
